Late in December 2001, Bacon Veneer President and CEO, Jim McCracken, received a phone call from one of his best friends – a veneer cutter in Europe – someone Bacon has been "trading" veneer with for three generations. The caller was so excited" he had found an incredible log of heavily figured Bubinga! "This log was just harvested in a low impact log cutting operation in Ghana. Of the trees being cut - Bubinga, Makore, and Anigre – this tree is the most spectacular – because of it’s large dimension and the "bumpy figure" on the outside of the log."

Jim promised to come to his friend's mill after the first of the year to supervise the cutting of these "one-of-a-kind" Bubinga logs. Upon Jim’s arrival, he found himself as excited over this find as his friend! When sliced, the "bumpy figure" became the deep, undulating, a virtual 3-dimensional figure – identified as pommele!

After careful slicing, drying, and clipping – this magnificent veneer log has become one of Bacon’s Gems of the Worlds Forest – sampled and ready for your inspection.

Specifications:
  • 12 flitches, totaling 145,000 square feet of architectural veneer.
  • Most of the flitches will yield a 10 ft cutting length.
  • Some of this veneer has an incredible width of over 3 feet.

When inquiring about this unique and exquisite addition to our inventory – please ask for :

The round logs have been readied for veneer slicing by: Debarking and squaring up in the sawmill. Here we see that the flitch has been squared-up to expose three "clean faces".

The flitch is being sliced in to veneer sheets. Here we see the veneer sheets (leaves) being stacked into sequence as they come out of the slicer carriage. Note: the veneer leaves on the floor, represent leaves that did not measure up to quality standards.
